Removing an internal wall to create an open-plan kitchen or reception room is one of the most popular home improvements in Canterbury and across the country. If the wall is load-bearing, the works must be designed and signed off by a structural engineer to keep the building safe and satisfy Building Regulations.
How we assess your wall
Our chartered structural engineers inspect the property to determine whether the wall carries load from the floors, roof or walls above. Where it does, they calculate the loads and design a suitable beam – typically a steel (RSJ) or engineered timber – together with the padstones or supports needed to carry it.
What you receive
- Confirmation of whether the wall is load-bearing
- Structural calculations for the replacement beam and supports
- A drawing and specification for your builder and Building Control
- Advice on temporary support during the works
The calculations and drawings we provide are accepted by Building Control and give your builder everything they need to proceed with confidence. Contact us to arrange a load-bearing wall assessment.
